Missing my Kids

Well my kids have been at Steve's folks house since Sunday. We are both really missing them. THey are nice enough to let us call them every night. I'm really glad b/c I'd go crazy without that.

Jilly has been a bit homesick. I keep reminding her that she wants to go to a sleep away camp next year. She thinks she might want to wait for that. LOL!
Drake on the other hand is just fine on his own. Its funny how different kids can be isn't it. I wonder if they would be different if their birth order were switched. Probably not.

We are doing well on our energy saving programs here at home. This months electric bill wasn't as big a drop as last month but we'll take it. We were down about 200 KWH over the same month last year. The airconditioner really takes a toll on the amount of energy you use. Even if you are using it sparingly.

Cash Duck

Have you guys heard of GPT sites?? Well, they are a great way to earn some "free" money. I've been working on them for a while now and earned several hundred dollars. Yes....I said hundreds. The site that I've had the best luck with so far is one called Cash Duck. They credit offers very quickly and responed to questions quick too.
Here is a link for anyone interested. If you have questions I'd be glad to answer any of them.

Day Two San Fran Trip==part one

We started this day early. I think we were waking up at about 6am.
I had read about the Farmers Market that was held every saturday morning. The guides said that the "locals" would come and do their weekly shopping for local veggies and fruit. I love farmers markets. My mom and dad would take me to them when I was younger. I can remember how happy I was to get a flat of strawberries. So, I really wanted to take the kids to this.
Photobucket
Everyone agreed and off we went. They didn't know that it was at least a mile or two walk down to the Ferry Building where the market was held. We had a pleasent walk. Steve and Drake spent the time testing their vertical jump on the sidewalk art/benches. I think the joggers, and there are TONS of joggers, thought they were a bit strange. But they were having fun together. JIlly and I stayed back so we weren't thought to be with the weirdos! LOL!!
Photobucket
When we got there in time for a really nice sunrise. The market was SPECTACULAR! We got to sample tons of local fruit and veggies. I don't think any of us has had such wonderful tasting oranges. We also sampled fried asaragus that was delish! I wish we could have something like that to shop at here. We bought some oranges for the room and a couple of fresh breads to eat for breakfast.

We had tickets to go to Alcatraz for 9:30am so we headed back down the bay toward the pier for our ferry. This is the one thing that EVERYONE wanted to do on this trip for sure. The kids and learned a little about it before the trip and I think were really looking forward to seeing a "real" jail.
The ferry over was fun. We sat outside on top to get the full view. It was chilly but we are tough!
Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
As you can see the views were stunning. We all thought the city view looked fake.
Once we got to Alcatraz the fun began. I had been before when I was a teenager (20 years ago) and was amazed at how much had changed. It has really deteriorated over the years. It made us really glad that our kids got to see it. It is something that their kids might not get to experience.
Photobucket
Photobucket Photobucket
We took our time walking up the steep hill to the prison house. One thing that I had not seen before and wasn't only on Alcatraz, was "wild" lilly flowers. They used lillies as ground cover. They were really really pretty. As a matter of fact all the flowers were gorgous.
Photobucket Photobucket

I think that is a good place to stop this post. I'll pick up inside the prison house.

Day One San Fran Trip Report

Well, I'm back at work and missing our time off. I'm going to do the trip report in sections. That way maybe I'll get it done.

We got up at 3am on Friday morning to fly out of OKC at 6am. We were a bit tired but more excited than anything. The kids didn't complain and I don't think they even fell back to sleep on the drive to the airport.

After a stop in AZ for a tiny lay over we arrived in Oakland airport right around noon. We were scared about how to get from the airport to our hotel since it was across the bay. We opted to spend a little $$ and hire a towncar. It was a nice ride over to the hotel. It was really neat seeing HUGE crane along the water to lift off the crates from the barges.

Photobucket
Once we got to our hotel we saw how close to Fishermans Wharf we were. It was a perfect location. We were all starving by this time. For some reason airplane peanuts just weren't holding us. So we walked over to Peir 39, tourist central, and found a hamburger joint to get something "safe" to eat.
Photobucket
You can see that Jilly was ready for a great day of getting the lay of the land.

After a good lunch at WindSurfers we headed out to explore the area around the hotel.
The wharf was a treat to look out over the bay. It was a little cloudy but no big deal.
Photobucket

After walking down the wharf we came across the Liberty Ship and submarine that Poppie had told us about.
Photobucket

It was really neat to look around the ship. I think the kids liked it too. Jilly thought the kitchen was cool. She thought the stuff was so little. Drake liked the guns the best.
Photobucket

I'm not sure how much the kids learned about the ship but I think the memory will help them in the future. Steve was in heaven. He loves the history stuff.

We thought about doing the submarine too but it started raining and the kids were historied out. I had made them skip the tourist shops after lunch b/c I was in a hurry to see "stuff" not "junk"! LOL! You know how moms are, go go go.

So back to the tourist central, Pier 39, and the shops. I did see one thing I just had to take a picture of...
Photobucket

Thank goodness he didn't turn into a grown up while on vacation. Although, he is getting there quickly.

Photobucket

After browsing at the shops for just a little while, we headed down the street along the water. We found a small beach area and stopped for the kids to play.
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket

I think the kids could have stayed here the rest of the day but I was to close to chocolate to let that happen. So we headed up the hill to Ghirardelli.
Photobucket

We were given free samples when we walked into the chocolate shop! YEA!! So we bought a bag of mixed chocolates and headed back to the beach to enjoy a few.
Photobucket

We started to get tired so we headed in to the hotel after eating at Boudin Bakery. We did a quick swing by the famous sea lions. It was pretty crowded so Jilly couldn't see them very well the first day but we could hear them just fine.
Photobucket

It was an early night what with the 3am morning and time change. We wanted to get up early the next day to head down to the Farmers Market. I'll close with a couple of pictures from the wharf area.

San Fran Here We Come!

I think I have everything in order for vacation. Bags are packed, clothes are set out, flight checked in, car set for pick-up. I think thats most of it.

Steve is at home right now putting down weed-n-feed. You know the yard will just go to hell if he doesn't do that TODAY! Four more days and it will be a jungle out there. Sometimes he is so much like my Dad that it frightens me.

I went to the book fair this morning. I did good and only bought 3 books. One for Drake, Jilly, & I for the airplane. Ooops, I bought 4! I forgot that Drake kept one at school to read. It was some Anime/Skateboard book. I knew that it would only take him like and hour to read so I made him pick out another one for the plane. Steve didn't get one. He'll read the tour books I have.

Tonight we have parent/teacher conferences. Steve will do Drakes teachers and I'll do Jilly's. I always like to go to these. Maybe I wouldn't if my kids weren't pretty good students. Its always easier to hear your kids are great than if you heard they were nothing but trouble.

Drake thought he was going to get a 'B' in reading. He had several papers he turned in late so he lost points. I have never seen a child so upset over a 'B'. Heck, when I was in school I was happy with them. Not him though. I thought he was going to have a breakdown over it. I finally convinced him to talk to his teacher and see if there was anything he could do about it. It sounds like he said the right things. You know, how it was all his fault, he knows it was his responsibility, etc... Well, it turns out that one of the ones he turned in he forgot his name on it so it wasn't recorded at all. So his 'B' grade was including a zero for one of his papers. I think the world is back on axis now that he found that out.

Jilly just finished her first "4th grade" book. She feels so smart about it. I'm just tickled pink that she does so well. I always worry about her vision but it seems that she is able to do any and everything she puts her mind to. Thankfully she hasn't put her mind to anything dangerous. Well, yet anyway!

I guess that's enough for now. I'm sure I'll make a big long report filled with pictures when I get back from San Francisco!

Got to post!

I've got to post something! Nothing really interesting has been going on. I keep waiting to see if something steller happens so I can post an amazing story. But alas, nothing.

We were able to buy a Wii. It is a ton of fun! I don't like video games and I've been playing it every single day. My stupid arms are sore from playing. Isn't that the saddest thing you've heard. Getting a workout from a video game. My only redemption is that Steve has got a little tiny bit sore from playing the baseball. I KNOW he is in good shape.

I had to wait in line at Wal-Mart to get one. Thank goodness the UPS man called me and told me that he had dropped some off. It is awesome to have connections.

Drake has started on his science fair project. He is doing a wind energy study. His hypothisis is that a 6 bladed windmill will generate more power than a 3 bladed one. If he is correct we will have to figure out why they use a 3 blade design on the "real" ones out here. I've had to pull Steve back from taking over the project. He is just eating it up! Poor Drake doesn't stand a chance.

Jilly is doing good. She has been complaining about karate a little bit. I was worried until she told me that her partner for ground fighting is just too "prissy". I guess that means that the girl isn't getting after it. Jilly is used to Drake sitting, punching, and otherwise abusing her. She doesn't get the whole girly thing.

Anna and I have a LCMW planned for July! I can't wait. In case you don't know what LCMW is, it stands for Linda Chapdelaine Memorial Weekend. We wanted to get together every year, just the two of us, but it hasn't worked out that way. The first year we went to MN for a Taste of Home convention. Then the other times the family has always been with us. So, I'm really pumped that we are just going together. We are meeting in PA for a DISMeets. It should be fun.

Ok, I think that's enough for now.

Sharing!

Well, my darling daughter has decided to share her illness with me! I started feeling yucky on Wednesday and still feel yucky today (Saturday). Thank goodness no one else has felt very bad. Drake has a little bit of a cough but nothing to bad. Steve seems to be feeling fine.

I got a cool new gadget in the mail this week. As you may or may not know, I'm a Bzz Agent on BzzAgent.com It is a company that sends out products to try and you are to spread the buzz about the product. Well, I got a Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner. I was feeling yucky when it came in so Drake put it together for us. Needless to say it is pretty easy to install. I could tell when I got up the next morning that it had run. I could smell the cleaner. It wasn't overpowering, just there. I thought the shower looked brighter but don't know if that was b/c they cleaned out some of the extra stuff in the shower.
After everyone was done with their morning shower, Drake wanted to be the one to push the clean button. It made me laugh that it had a warning alarm before it started spraying, like "Hey, get out quick! I'm gonna blow!" Well, after Drake closed the shower door he climbed onto the side of the tub so he could watch it spray. It looked just like it does in the commercials. I'll keep you posted on how well it cleans.

Tuesday

I've actually been busy since the last post.

Last Thursday was Valentines Day. It was a nice day. I woke up to 3 wrapped presents all for me on the kitchen table. WOW!! It was a shock. I mean, I suspected I would get a little something but not 3 big presents. Thats more than I got for my birthday. Well, I got two pairs of jeans (needed), a fleur de leis necklace (wanted), and a lovebug in a box (loved). It was great! The kids each got a goodie bag sent to them at school and Steve had a goodie basket at home.

I sent cups and plates for Drakes Vday party. Being in 6th grade there was no way that I was invited to attened. That would be so uncool! Lucky for me, Jilly still wants me around. So I went to her party and didn't even have to bring anything.

Jilly ended up sick during the party. I tooke her home after the party and she went down hill from there! I'm pretty sure she had viral bronchitis. Poor thing was coughing up a storm. She stayed sick all weekend. But she is finally about done coughing. Thank Goodness!! For those of you who know me well, you know I don't do well without a full nights sleep, and a coughing kid doesn't lend itself to sweet dreams. Thank God for my dear sweet hubbie!

Saturday Drake had to go to karate to help another kid earn his blackbelt. One of the instructors was earning his 3rd degree black belt. Man oh man was that a site to behold!! They brought in some fighters from another town. Not just regular fighters but professional and semi-professional fighters. They did not hold back! My eyes were popping out of my head. I hate to say this but it was AWESOME to watch. Poor Garic (the 3rd degree) ended up dislocating his shoulder.
Here is a video of one round that Drake fought. He is in the red shirt & Jilly is the kid yelling in the background.
Well, dang!! I can't get the video to attach. Sorry!!

Well, thats enough for now. This week is full of basketball games. Woo Hoo!

02/13/2008

It's been nearly a week since I last posted. One would think that something interesting would have happened in that time span, but alas, no such luck in my home.

We met Steve's folks in Canadian TX on Sunday. We were taking them our "ole Bestsy" pick-up and Don's tools that we borrowed for some project or another. So we picked the half-way spot that had good food. Nothing like planning around where to eat. Does everyone do this or just me? I'm glad we did because my lunch was GREAT! I had BBQ ribs and cleaned every scrap from my plate. So, if any of you are going through Canadian TX you should stop at the Cattle Exchange resturant.

What else have we done this past week....hmmmm??

I'm on the hunt for a WII game system. We told Drake that if he paid his $100 or so we would make up the difference. He was thrilled with that idea until we discovered they are still impossible to find. I thought that since Christmas is over they would be available. Well, they aren't. Now I have to call different stores everyday to see if they got any in that day. I'm even friendly with the UPS man in Weatherford and he said he'd call me if he delivered any to Wal-Mart. How great is that!! So, if anyone out there has a WII they want to get rid of call me!

I hope to have more to write about next time.

Thursday

Yesterday Jillian won her first karate sparring tournament. She beat all the other 7 and 8 year olds in her class. I had to laugh at this becasue just the other day she had complained that she didn't like to spar. When I asked her why she didn't like it she said that it was boring. That she didn't get to hit anyone, only touch them. It seems her older brother has toughened her up quite a bit. None of that sissy shadow boxing for her! She wants a full on UFC style battle!! Ahhh Daddy's little girl!!
I'm really proud how well she does at karate.
She also lost a tooth yesterday. We tried to convince Drake that it was punched out during karate and that she didn't even cry. After a wide eyed "Really?", we laughed and told him the truth. But for a second there I think he feared for his future bullying.

Wednesday

Nothing very exciting has happened so far this week. We are waiting to hear about the CMO contest. They said "on or about" Feb 7th. So I've been checking the e-mail like a mad women all week long.

I was able to teach my very into name brands son a lesson in savy shopping. He needed new jean this past weekend. Well, of course he wanted to go to the mall and buy $50 jeans. He needed to look cool ya know. So, I told him we had to go to the thrift stores first. He pitched a big fit over this idea. I understand that thrift stores aren't something kids brag about but if I'm paying that is where we start. Mainly because the is NO WAY I'm going to buy big dollar jeans for a 12 year old.
He went with me and looked. He was pouting the whole time until....... I hit the mother load! Apparently I found a pair of Hurley jeans. This is a top brand for "skater" kids. Also a brand that I would never ever buy. I've also found a pair of Etinnes shoes and some cool concert t-shirts.
After this shopping trip I made him say those dreaded words that every kids hates! "You were right Mom." It was a whole lot easier to say with a cool pair of jeans in his bag!

So now I've won another convert over to the treasure hunt of thrift store shopping! YEA!!

Open Forum?!?

I've always been very happy that my kids seem to be really open with me. They have always talked to me about their problems, hopes, dreams, etc...
I've always been closer in this area to Drake than to Jilly. I think that we are just a lot a like in personality. I know, poor boy!

Well, as I've said before, he is growing up. As you parents out there already know, growing up brings along all kinds of new and interesting questions. When you have an open forum relationship this can put you in a tough spot. I NEVER EVER would have talked to my parents like Drake talks to me. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad he comes to me but I'm also SHOCKED that he comes to me.

I've had everything asked from "Did you do drugs?" to "What are cramps girls talk about?" WOW! Talk about thinking before you answer!! Again, this is me, his mom, that he is asking this to!! You would think that he would be more comfortable talking to another male but NOOOO!

So those of you out there with small children. Think about this next time you have family share time!! Or the next time you foster those close open talking sessions. Get ready!! Your day wil come and you will have to think fast on your feet to come up with an appropriate answer.

For those of you who have been in my shoes, say a prayer that I answer correctly. And how come you didn't warn me?

For those of you who have missed out on this great relationship with your children, I'm sorry for you and jealous all at the same time!

Tuesday

I think I should have named my blog something different. I'm not real good at writing something on a DAILY basis. I guess we will just have to get over that. Won't we.

I was looking through some pictures the other day and really noticed how much my kids have grown. Its strange when they get to that age. You know, when you see that it won't be long and they will move out and become an adult. I know, they are only 12 & 8, but its hitting me lately.

Just look at these pictues.

Photobucket
This is from February 2007

This is from September 2007

Look at the change in just those few months. I know it is a strange choice of picture but that is when I noticed it.

It took me an hour just to post this much today. I got sidetracked cleaning up the "My Pictures" area of my computer. I think my son has a Gabillion pictures of cartoon characters and skateboarders on my computer!!

Sunday

Well, another week is done. They really do seem to fly by us.
We spent the week developing a 60 second video clip for Steve to enter a contest. It was a lot of fun to try different ideas. I say a lot of fun.....we also argued a lot!

We all played our parts...

Steve was the unappreciated lead actor. If only we could understand how difficult his job was to do!

I was the controlling director/cameraman. Mine were the only ideas that were any good and I could understand why they just wouldn't do what I told them!

Drake was the frustrated editor. He just couldn't make us understand that there are some things that just can't be done. For some reason his parents had to be proven that what he said was the truth even though they had no idea how to do the job he did!

Jilly was the adorable child actor. The one that is unaffected by the chaos around her. She didn't have to practice her lines and they always came across perfectly.

Well, we all survived and we turned in the application. It is to win a "job" with Disney as the Chief Magic Official. Steve will be great at this type of thing. We also wanted to show the kids that if you don't try for things you will never achieve anything.
Looking back we had fun doing it. If he gets to the finals you can bet I'll be calling everyone I know to vote for him!!

Here is the video

Steve and I are working on doing a video for the Disney CMO contest. Needless to say, it isn't going so well. We are just not a creative duo. He is much more than I am but that isn't saying much.
My friends have been very helpful and have given their ideas. The problem is that they all live far far away and can't come here and make it happen. If anyone out there wants to come and produce a creative video for us, Please hurry over! There is only 3 days left to enter.

I said I'd post some pictures from the family visit. So here we go. Lets see if I can figure this part out.

Photobucket
Here are Anna's and my kids with Poppie.

The kids watching something interesting, I'm sure, on TV.

Here is Jilly with a baby goat. Ron & Jenny had baby goats born while we were there. This one is less than a day old.

**Just so you know, it only took 4 tries to figure out how to post the pictures! NOt to bad for a first timer!

First Post

Welcome to my first blog! I thought this might be a fun way to share the daily adventures of the Drinnon family. I know that most days are pretty dull but I think it will be a nice way to keep up to date.

I guess, just in case, I should post a bit about myself and my family. I am a full time pharmacist as is my husband, Steve. Steve and I have been married almost 15 years. We are best freinds and enjoy hanging out together. I have two children, Drake (12) and Jillian (8). We live in a VERY small town in western Oklahoma. Drake is very independent and is involved in karate, skateboarding, & technology. I say technology because he does stuff with gadets that I don't understand at all. Over all I'd say he is extremly smart. Jilly is a bright ray of sunshine. She has albinism and has low vision. She is involved in karate, art, and Disney.

We just finished having my dad and sister for a visit. It was really great getting the whole family together for awhile. I'm always shocked how much the kids change in the time between visits. Matt and Trey are becoming fine young men. Chase is quite the charmer. He knows how to get what he wants with his winning smile.

Trey stikes me as a very thoughful person. He seems to want to think everything through before he takes the first step. Jilly is a lot like this but doesn't always want to take the time to think it through. She is more the type to worry about it afterwards.

Matt is just happy go lucky. His smile just cracks me up! He always looks like he is either planning something or getting away with something. I think he will be the type that has tons of friends and is a trend setter. You know, the kid that when everyone else is picking on someone's clothes, comes along and says "I think its kinda neat". Then the next thing you know EVERYONE thinks its the latest and greatest.

I'll try to post some pictures from the visit later.

Well, I guess that will be the first of many blogs to come. Wish me luck!!
